Saints Limp into Scouting Combine Injuries to Bush, Brees concern New Orleans coach Payton
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton took the podium in the media room at the NFL scouting combine this morning. And I don't think it's my imagination, but the 43-year-old coach looks like he has aged about five years since his star quarterback and wunderkind running back were both hurt this month.
Drew Brees dislocated his non-throwing elbow in the Pro Bowl, at the hands of the Ravens' Terrell Suggs by the way, and then multi-purpose tailback Reggie Bush turned his ankle in a celebrity hoops game at the NBA All-Star gala in Las Vegas.
"What I've said (about) Bush is that I'm glad it's not August or September," Payton said.
"These guys are competitive. Drew gets hurt in the Pro Bowl, Reggie in a basketball game," Payton added. "Anytime they leave the building, you're concerned. Fortunately, both incidents weren't serious."
Payton is looking at the draft from an entirely different perspective this year. Last year as a rookie head coach, he drafted No. 2 and Bush fell into his lap. This year, after a startling 10-6 playoff run, the Saints pick 27th.
He's not complaining.
"If you pick too high too long, you're not going to be picking for long," he said.
NFL Future: Willy Korn
Willy Korn is a quarterback that has all the tools to be a tremendous prospect at the next level. Sophisticated understanding of the game and a great work ethic. Very quick, though unorthodox, release that Willy Korn uses well in his timing routes prevalent in his offensive system. Willy Korn’s waggles and rollouts are also prevalent and has a tendency to try to get outside of the pocket in the face of pressure in lieu of just stepping up for a few extra seconds.
NFL Future: Stephen Garcia
Jefferson four-star quarterback Stephen Garcia made his commitment to South Carolina last week at a press conference at his school. Over the weekend, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound star made his official visit to Columbia and the trip only reinforced his decision. Find out all the scoop on the visit and more in this Gamecock Central update.
