Saints' Starters Set to Hit the Field Against Bengals
New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton plans to play his starting offensive and defense for a full half of Saturday night's pre-season game at Cinncinati — with one notable exception.
Quarterback Drew Brees will play a quarter before backup Jamie Martin takes over and plays with the rest of the starters in the second quarter.
“I think it's important to give Jamie some time with the starters,” Payton said after another steaming hot practice at Millsaps College this morning.
Payton plans to play the second units through most of the second half, working the third teamers in near the end of the game.
New quarterback acquisition Matt Baker will take over for Martin after a series or two in the third quarter and play the remainder of the game, Payton said.
“We're trying to get a good look at all the quarterbacks,” said Payton, who indicated the Saints would “probably” keep three quarterbacks.
Baker, Payton said, “possesses a strong arm. We liked him in his tryout and we're anxious to see how he responds in the game environment.”
The Saints will break training camp following their last Millsaps practice session Wednesday morning. They will fly to Cincinnati Wednesday afternoon and then practice twice with the Bengals on Thursday.
