Saints Bid Farewell to Jackson
The Saints are going! The Saints are going!
Actually, by the time you read this, the New Orleans Saints are gone — from Jackson and Millsaps where they completed their final Mississippi practice this morning before boarding a jet for Cincinnati .
The Saints should have felt right at home this morning. They were greeted at 8:45 a.m. with a practice field temperature of 90 degrees and a heat index of 100. Over the next hour, 45 minutes it only got hotter.
Saints coach Sean Payton gave his team a break, practicing in shorts and no pads.
A crowd of 309, one of the smallest of training camp, watched the workout and most hung around afterward for autographs. Deuce McAllister, Reggie Bush, Payton and Drew Brees remained long after practice to sign.
“You just want to show your appreciation for everyone coming out in all this heat to watch and support us,” McAllister said.
The Saints completed their second preseason camp at Millsaps and Payton said things could scarcely have gone better, despite the intense heat.
“It's a good marriage,” Payton said. “The people here at Millsaps and with the city and state have gone out of their way to meet all our needs. We've got the heat down pat. We know how to handle it.”
The Saints are scheduled to practice with the Cincinnati Bengals twice Thursday at the Bengals' training facility before playing the Bengals in a Saturday night preseason game.
Training camp will then resume Monday in New Orleans .
“We'll switch from Mississippi heat to Louisiana heat,” McAlllister joked. “There's not that much difference I can tell.”
