New Orleans Saints Report Card

When the New Orleans professionals reported for training camp in Jackson in late July, most looked at the roster and shook their heads. The offensive line was suspect at best on a team that was coming off a 3-13 record. Fans feared for Deuce McAllister, who was coming back from ACL surgery. Ditto Drew Brees, who was coming off shoulder surgery and wasn´t throwing deep yet.

Yet, a patchwork offensive line that had to be put together early in camp because injuries to two projected starters has really been the biggest surprise -- not the weakest link -- during the club´s magical 5-1 start. And they have done it with new starters at all five positions.

Not only have tackles Jammal Brown and Jon Stichcomb, guards Jamar Nesbit and rookie Jahri Evans and center Jeff Faine played well together over-all, they´ve been among the best in the NFL at protecting the quarterback in allowing just six sacks in six games. That´s not a typo, six is the actual number.

In their most recent game om Oct. 15 against the Eagles, the unheralded line kept the Birds, who had recorded an NFL-high 23 sacks going into the game, from getting to Brees in the Saints 27-24 victory. That extended their string of not allowing a sack in 10 quarters, with the last coming from in the middle of the second quarter to Carolina All-Pro defensive end Julius Peppers on Oct. 1. Not only has  he played in the Super Bowl, he also played in the Final Four while a two-sport star at North Carolina.

"Our offensive line has been detail-oriented," said McAllister, who has rushed for 444 yards and a 4.9 average with four TDs. "They´ve been able to basically go out there and compete on every play. They´re not going to be perfect -- but nobody is. They´re trying to go out and make plays, and you have to have confidence in them."

Nesbit, a former starter for the Panthers, said the Saints didn´t take it personally when the experts were talking about how bad the offensive line was going to be back in camp. If anything, it motivated them.

"You hear stuff like that, but any time you you don´t have five Pro Bowlers or two Pro Bowlers -- or one for that matter -- you are going to be a question mark," Nesbit wanted it known. "It was just one of those things where they guys took it upon themselves to not be the weak link."

The Saints´ first six games have taught a lot of people a lot of things, particularly about what happens when you assume something.

The Saints are two-point favorites over the Baltimore Ravens Sunday at noon in the Superdome.

Report card on the Saints after six games:

PASSING OFFENSE

B+ -- Sean Payton and Drew Breese have made a major difference in the passing game with the play-calling/execution aspect of the offense running smoothly and, for the most part, rather efficiently. Brees has been intelligent with the ball, hitting 66.7 per cent of his passes in completing 138 of 207 attempts for 1,509 yards and 8 TDs. He has a passer rating of 92.8 and his 127.8 fourth-quarter rating led the NFL going into the bye week. Rookies Reggie Bush (38-285-0) and Marques Colston (27-414-4) are the leading receivers, but four-time Pro Bowl pick Joe "Little Big" Horn (25-381-2) remains a large past of the passing offense.

RUSHING OFFENSE

C -- New Orleans has been right around the middle of the pack om NFL rankings the past three weeks, mainly because they´ve been able to pass so efficiently. Deuce McAllister has come back nicely from knee surgery while Bush has found it difficult to get going on the ground with only 195 yards and a 3.0 average on 65 attempts. "Reggie is just a step away from breaking a long one the outside," said Hokie Gajan, ex Saints fullback. The Saints will want to try and run the ball on a more consistent basis in the final 10 games in order to keep opposing defenses honest.

PASS DEFENSE

B -- While they haven´t ben geat, somehow they haven´t been lousy either. The Saints have allowed 189.5 yards a game, but have faced two classic passers in Brett Favre and Donavon McNabb. New Orleans won both games, however, and have shown an ability to cover wide receivers and limited big plays although they have allowed 10 TDs. The Saints have recorded 18 sacks in six games, just seven fewer than last season, and have applied lots of pressure from all angles. The only negative is they have made only four interceptions of them by strong-side linebacker Scott Fujita, the "Asian Assassin."

RUSH DEFENSE

C -- Let´s not trash the Saints´ run defense because it has been a lot better than it has in recent years. Still, after a good start in th first three games, they´ve allowed 151.o yards a game and 5.per rushing attempt in the past three games. For the season, they are allowing 119,7 yards per outing and have given uo four rushing TDs. Four newcomers --  defensive tackle Hollis Thomas and linebackers Fujita, Mark Simoneau and Scoot Shanie -- have made a major difference in making the run defense more respectable, a very weak department in recent seasons.

SPECIAL TEAMS

A- --The Saints´ special teams have impacted three home games with four big plays -- a blocked punt, blocked field goal, punt return TD and a fumble recovery on punt coverage -- which has sparked some solid play so far this season. They have also have been good at kicker coverage and in the return game, although their kickoff return average of 21.6 yards could be better. Healed Michael Lewis could return for the Ravens game. If so, he could give the Saints excellent field position with his returns. John Carney has been steady in converting 13 of 14 field goal attempts, while undrafted rookie ount Steve Weatherford has been solid in averaging 44.8 yards a boot with a net of 38.2. He also has dropped seven puns inside the 20.

COACHING -- In his first head-coaching season ever at any level, Sean Payton has made all the right moves when it comes to personnel decisions, getting his team ready to play during the off-season, conducting a grueling training camp, and implementing and executing game plans. Payton´s also proven to be adept at motivating his players as well as the home crowds.

NOTES -- The Saints have activated Billy Miller, a seven-year veteran. Miller, a 6-foot-3, 252-pounder from USC, went to training camp with the Saints this summer, but was waived on the final cut. he was re-signed to help fill in with starter Ernie Conwell expected to miss 2-to-4 weeks after having a knee scoped...Third-strong quarterback Jason Fife, who was waived last wek to open up a roster spot, was re-signed to the practice squad...

After starting the season at 5-1, Payton and Brees were popular national TV guests last week. Before the team began a four-day break for its bye week, Payton did interviews for ESPN News, Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith, Jim Rome is Burning, the NFL Network and Fox Sports Net Southwest. Pardon the Interruption had Brees as a guest for a segment called "Five Good Minutes."...Regional cable network CST (Cox Sports Television) and the Saints have t\reached an agreement to carry year-round programming of the team through the 2010 season...The four-year extension calls for the continuation of Saints produced programming -- including the weekly half-hour show Outside the Huddle, the re-airing of the weekly highlight show Saints Game Plan as well as a 30-minute show post-game show called Saints Tonight...CST will continue to air Payton´s weekly news conference live.
