New Orleans Saints at Pittsburgh Steelers Preview
Team News

GAME: New Orleans Saints (6-2) at Pittsburgh Steelers (2-6)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, November 12 - 4:15 PM EST
SPREAD: Pittsburgh -4.5 TOTAL: 45

The New Orleans Saints have a Rookie of the Year candidate. It's just that their leading contender - wide receiver Marques Colston - came with one of the last picks in the draft while one of the first selections - running back Reggie Bush - has yet to fulfill his potential. The reversal is perhaps as surprising as the Saints leading the NFC South and the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers spiraling toward playoff elimination heading into their matchup Sunday at Heinz Field."The most important thing is we're 6-2. That's No. 1 in my mind," Colston said. "Personal accolades, they can only take you so far."Colston, who went to Division I-AA Hofstra and was drafted 252nd overall of 255 players selected, has caught 44 passes for 700 yards and seven touchdowns. He is fourth in the NFL in receiving yardage and is tied with St. Louis' Torry Holt for the league lead in TD receptions.Colston became quarterback Drew Brees' primary option last week with Joe Horn out because of a groin injury. The 6-foot-4, 231-pound receiver caught a career-high 11-passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in leading the Saints to a 31-14 win at Tampa Bay.The Saints (6-2) hope Horn can return this week when they visit the NFL's eighth-rated defense, allowing 284.1 total yards per game. The Steelers (2-6) are ninth-best against the pass with 189.0 yards allowed per game.Brees has three touchdown passes in each of the last three games, and threw for more than 300 yards in the last two. He completed a season-best 75 percent of his passes (24-of-32) for 314 yards without an interception last week to lead the Saints to the third win in four games.Bush has had little to do with that recent success. The Heisman Trophy winner out of USC and second overall selection in the draft, Bush ran for minus-5 yards on 11 carries and caught four passes for 22 yards while playing through an ankle injury last week.Since rushing for 125 yards through his first three NFL games, Bush has been held to 82 yards on 47 carries. He has only 62 yards receiving over the past three games after totaling 250 through his first five."Obviously as a competitor you want to be out there making plays and making big runs for your team," Bush said. "But at the same time, it doesn't always work in your favor."Bush isn't the only struggling Saints running back. Deuce McAllister has been limited to 43 yards on 20 carries over the last two weeks. He still leads the team's ground attack with 487 yards and five touchdowns. In these teams' lone meeting since 1994 - a 32-29 Saints win on Oct. 6, 2002 in the Superdome - McAllister ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. The Saints' 92.2 rushing yards per game ranks 27th in the NFL. The Steelers' 95.1 rushing yards allowed per game places them ninth in the NFL."I want balance," said first-year Saints coach Sean Payton, who took over after the team went 3-13 last season in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. "We went into (Sunday's game) wanting to have some balance, yet you have to be able to recognize what they are trying to do defensively and how you want to react to it. Having that flexibility is important."The trouble for the Steelers, losers of three straight and six of seven, did not lie in moving the ball last week - their woes began with holding on to it.Pittsburgh committed six turnovers, their most in nine years, in a 31-20 home defeat to Denver. Losing a rematch of last year's AFC title game was a major blow to Pittsburgh's playoff hopes. No team has bounced back from a 2-6 record and a loss in its eighth game to qualify for the postseason."I would have bet my house before the season started that we wouldn't be 2-6," defensive lineman Casey Hampton said. "I'd be homeless right now."Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed 38 of 54 passes for a career-high 433 yards and a touchdown last Sunday, but he threw three interceptions - two at the Broncos' 3-yard line. Roethlisberger has totaled seven interceptions in the last two games.Pittsburgh's 10 turnovers in that two-game stretch increased its season total to 24, one more than it had all of last season. The Saints' 10 takeaways, though, are the fourth-fewest in the NFL."We're doing the same thing over and over," said Steelers running back Willie Parker. "We're a great team that's 2-6, and it's because we're not concentrating on the little things."Receiver Hines Ward has challenged his teammates to remain focused. The reigning Super Bowl MVP has performed well in the three-game skid, catching at least 10 passes in each game while totaling 379 receiving yards and three touchdowns."At 2-6, you have to audition for next year," Ward said. "We'll see now who wants it and who throws in the towel."
