New Orleans Saints vs. Dallas Cowboys Preview

History says the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints have vastly different stories to tell. In 2006, the NFC clubs are on the same path.

Sunday night, in full view of a national TV audience, the division leaders collide at Texas Stadium. No battle during the 40-year, 21-game series has meant more.

Dallas (8-4) leads the NFC East by two games while the Saints (8-4) are in front of the NFC South. Sunday's winner will have the inside track to a playoff bye and could give Chicago a run for the top seed in the conference.

"Each week is a new challenge," New Orleans head coach Sean Payton said after Sunday's 34-10 thrashing of San Francisco here at the Dome. "We have some tough games coming up, beginning with Dallas. We will have plenty of time to talk about how important this game is."

The Cowboys are fresh off their own big win -- a 23-20 decision at Giants Stadium after Martin Gramatica (signed last week) booted a game-winning 46-yard field goal with 1 second remaining. The victory helped the Cowboys put a stranglehold on the NFC East, but the game against the Saints didn't allow Dallas head coach Bill Parcells much time to celebrate.

"You know I was very happy we won that game," Parcells said Monday. "I had just seen my daughter and boarded the bus "" we haven't even left the parking lot "" and I'm already thinking about what I have to do this week."

With the Bears (10-2) struggling, many believe Dallas is the best team in the NFC.

"I try to stay with the idea of first things first," Parcells said. "I'm wondering about positioning now, but positioning is about winning the division. There is a lot of football left and there are problems on the horizon."

The immediate problem is the Saints, who have piled up yardage in the second half of the season. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees saw his streak of five 300-yard games come to an end Sunday, but it didn't stop his offense.

Rookie Reggie Bush scored four touchdowns and fellow running back Deuce McAllister gained more than 100 yards as the Saints were extremely thin at wide receiver. Rookie star Marques Colston missed his second game due to injury and veteran Joe Horn was lost after his lone first-quarter catch.

"We have a lot of weapons," Bush said. "I felt like (Sunday) was my day to shine. We're spreading the ball around pretty good and it's working for us."

Among the storylines this week will be the first regular-season matchup of Payton and Parcells. Payton was an assistant coach under Parcells with the Cowboys for the past three seasons. Prior to 2005, Payton was promoted to assistant head coach/passing game coordinator. He began the season with Dallas' play-calling duties.

"I just look at it like it is the next game we have to play," said Parcells, who is a veteran at playing against former assistants. "I try to keep the personal feelings out of it."

NOTE: When Dallas and New Orleans met in Week 15 (one week later than this year) during the 1991 season, the Saints were 9-4 and battling for first place in the NFC West. The Cowboys were 8-5 in the NFC East. Dallas's 23-14 victory at Texas Stadium sparked a three-game winning streak to complete the regular season second in the division (11-5). The Saints rallied with two wins and captured the NFC West title at 11-5.

Reggie Bush News

Reggie Bush doesn't need to look far for inspiration Dolphins tailback Reggie Bush scored two rushing touchdowns in Sunday's 20-9 victory over the Redskins While the quarterback of his present team was explaining why the Miami Dolphins offense is finally transforming red zone opportunities into touchdowns, the player who scored them on Sunday stood 10-feet away leering at the offense of his former team.

Miami Dolphins’ Reggie Bush pleased with active role Two snapshots of Dolphins running back Reggie Bush : firing the ball high into the Sun Life Stadium seats after his 18-yard run put the game away; and, standing at the podium for his postgame media session, pausing at the start for a few seconds as he watched his former team, New Orleans, kick the winning field goal against Atlanta on a TV over his right shoulder.

Noisemakers: Reggie Bush one of five must-buys for playoff push With so many owners with an eye toward the future and league trade deadlines nearing, we're temporarily abandoning the traditional Noisemakers format to bring you five widely-owned, but underappreciated, players playoff-minded owners should strongly consider dealing for. Each could be a cornerstone on championship rosters. (Note: Numbers next to each team denote points allowed rank) Reggie Bush ...

Reggie Bush Fantasy: Dolphins RB Making Bid For Featured Spot Reggie Bush has been a bit of a fantasy bust throughout his NFL career. With a second straight strong performance, though, maybe he's not such a lost cause after all. The Miami Dolphins running back rushed for 92 yards on just 13 carries and scored a touchdown to help lead his team to emphatic win over the AFC West-leading Kanas City Chiefs . Just for good measure, Bush also had three catches ...

Fantasy Football Fan Analysis: Week 11 AFC East Sits and Starts Week 11 of the NFL season is just hours away. Dolphins’ offensive player to watch: Reggie Bush How he beats you: At his best when playing in space, the 6-foot, 203-pound Bush is startling to settle in with the Dolphins and is being used in a variety of ways. He has great speed, agility and elusiveness. He’s a good route-runner and has good hands. Bush leads the Dolphins in rushing with 88 carries for 427 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and a touchdown. He also has 24 catches for 164 yards and ...

Can Reggie Bush Save Tony Sparano's Job with Miami Dolphins? Reggie Bush will have no impact on the job status of Tony Sparano, who is pretty much a lame-duck coach. Sparano could win every game the rest of this season and still be out of a job. The Miami Dolphins will be making some major changes in the offseason. With the possibility of changes from top to bottom, Sparano will only be the first causality of this terrible season. I have always felt that ...
