Redskins vs. Saints Preview

GAME: Washington Redskins (4-9) at New Orleans Saints (9-4)

DATE/TIME: Sunday, December 17 - 1:00 PM EST

A year ago, the New Orleans Saints were in the middle of one of the worst seasons in franchise history. They're now on the verge of clinching a playoff spot. The NFC South-leading Saints look to continue their impressive turnaround and win their first division title since 2000 when they host the Washington Redskins on Sunday.Various scenarios can put New Orleans (9-4) in the postseason, but a win Sunday will give the Saints the division."There aren't any playoff feelings," Saints coach Sean Payton told the team's official Web site. "We have a chance to do something this weekend and then begin to look at the picture. I think at this point with three games left in the season, everybody begins to look at all of the scenarios that can take place."I just think that what we've been able to do is look at and work on the team we're playing this week."The Saints finished 3-13 in 2005 and were displaced due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina. With many new faces on its roster this season, New Orleans has gone from the second-worst team in the NFL to a Super Bowl contender. Many fans welcomed the team when it arrived home after a 42-17 win at NFC East-leading Dallas last Sunday night."There must have been between 500 and 1,000 fans going crazy," defensive back Steve Gleason said. "I was like, 'Man, this is such a special time for us, because this is such a special town in such a special situation.' For us to be able to bring that kind of joy to this community, I couldn't be more grateful."Saints fans are grateful to have Drew Brees running the NFL's top-ranked offense (410.6 yards per game). Brees matched a career high by throwing five touchdowns against the Cowboys, giving him an NFL-best 25 for the season. He was 26-for-38 for 384 yards and earned NFC offensive player of the week honors. Brees leads the league with 4,033 passing yards.New Orleans continued to get big performances from non-marquee names as well.Fullback Mike Karney scored three touchdowns against Dallas, improving receiver Devery Henderson scored on a 42-yard TD pass and reserve receiver Jamal Jones caught the first touchdown pass of his career."Coach does a great job of utilizing everybody," Karney said. "It's just a matter of knowing when your number's called, and when it's called to capitalize."Bigger names like Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush have coexisted well in the New Orleans backfield. McAllister looks for a third straight 100-yard rushing game after gaining 111 yards on 21 carries against the Cowboys.McAllister rushed for 165 yards on 20 carries in New Orleans' 24-20 win over Washington (4-9) in the last matchup between these teams on Nov. 30, 2003.Bush caught six passes for 125 yards last week, including a 61-yard touchdown reception off a short pass, for his second straight game of 100 or more receiving yards. Bush is third in the NFL with 79 receptions. While the Saints' offense has played well, their defense has continued to improve. New Orleans allowed 22.8 points a game through the first 10 contests of the season, but has given up 13.3 during its three-game winning streak. The Redskins, 1-5 on the road, have lost two straight and seven of nine since splitting their first four games of the season. Washington went 10-6 and beat Tampa Bay in the first round of the playoffs last season.Running back Clinton Portis suffered a season-ending hand injury after eight games this year, and the defense that ranked ninth in the NFL in 2005 ranks 23rd this season."It all started with the expectations being so high for this team coming off last season and not having the success that everyone thought we would have early on," safety Troy Vincent said. "You have a great coaching staff, a lot of talent, you go out and spend money in free agency thinking you that you filled the right pieces that you needed to fill for the puzzle, and it's not happening Sunday."Washington had more than 400 total yards of offense last week, but lost 21-19 to Philadelphia after falling behind by 18 points in the first half.Second-year quarterback Jason Campbell continues to learn on the job. He's 63-for-122 for 713 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions in four starts since taking over for Mark Brunell. He threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Antwaan Randle El for Washington's only touchdown last week. The Redskins, who have scored under 20 points in their last five games, will finish with a losing record for the second time in Joe Gibbs' three seasons since coming out of retirement. The Saints have won two straight against Washington, but are 1-5 in the last six meetings in New Orleans.

Reggie Bush to the Dallas Cowboys? 4 Reasons It Would Work Around this time last year, I published an article detailing  why the Cowboys should have signed Reggie Bush  in the offseason.  Well, my thoughts haven’t really changed.  Here’s why Bush would be a valuable asset to Dallas.   4.  He may not cost anything (other than money, of course).
