Saints vs. Giants Preview

With a postseason berth secured, the New Orleans Saints can control where they finish in the NFC playoff picture. The New York Giants are hoping just to be a part of it.

After clinching the NFC South title, the Saints (9-5) can earn the conference's second seed Sunday as they take on New York (7-7), which is hoping to boost its chances of earning a wild-card spot.

New Orleans can lock up a first-round bye this week if it beats the Giants and Dallas loses to Philadelphia on Monday night. The Saints, who host Carolina on New Year's Eve in their season finale, can clinch the No. 2 seed without any help by winning out.

The Saints won the third division title in franchise history Sunday despite having their three-game win streak snapped with a 16-10 home loss to Washington. New Orleans clinched when the Panthers fell to Pittsburgh on Sunday, a day after Atlanta was eliminated by losing to Dallas.

The NFC South title was the latest accomplishment in a year that has seen the Saints rebound from a 3-13 record last season, but New Orleans wasn't happy after the defeat.

"For the city and organization, we are happy to be going to the playoffs and to be able to clinch the NFC South, but at the same time you have to look at this game and wonder, 'How much did we improve?"' running back Deuce McAllister said. "When you go into the playoffs you want to be on a roll. Now we've got two games to get our act together."

Quarterback Drew Brees was also in no mood to celebrate despite going 21-for-38 for 207 yards against the Redskins, upping his totals to an NFL-leading 4,240 yards and an NFC-best 25 touchdown passes.

"Our standards are higher than maybe what you would think," said Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who threw an interception for the first time in four games and did not have a touchdown pass for the first time since Week 3. "We won the division. That's great, but it came in a loss. We still have more things now that we want to accomplish.

"New Orleans should be able to do that if Brees can duplicate the results of his first game against the Giants, owners of the NFL's 28th-ranked pass defense.

Playing for San Diego, Brees threw for the second-best completion percentage of his six-year career against New York on Sept. 25, 2005, going 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) for 191 yards and two touchdowns in the Chargers' 45-23 win.

Brees, though, isn't expected to have Joe Horn as a target Sunday, as the receiver missed his second straight game last week with a groin injury that could sideline him for the rest of the regular season.

The Saints will be look to re-establish their ground game after totaling 71 yards against Washington. McAllister had just 48 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, and Reggie Bush had 14 yards on seven rushes. New Orleans had averaged 174.5 rushing yards in its previous two games.

The Saints will be facing a Giants team that has little idea of whether it will make the playoffs in the jumbled NFC. New York might not qualify with a 9-7 record, but the myriad of playoff possibilities could also allow the Giants to get in at 7-9.

While the Giants can't repeat as NFC East champions, they can still make the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1989-90. New York can't be eliminated this week, but could clinch a berth if it wins and all four of the following results occur in either of two scenarios this week: First, the Vikings and Falcons don't win, and the Eagles and Seahawks don't lose.

Second, the Vikings, Falcons and 49ers don't win, and the Eagles don't lose. New York added to the confusion surrounding its fate by losing 36-22 to Philadelphia last week, its third straight home defeat and fifth in six games overall.

The Giants are hoping to get a boost from defensive end Michael Strahan, who could return after missing the last six games because of a sprained right foot. Coach Tom Coughlin said the medical staff wanted to see Strahan practice this week before clearing him to play.

The Giants are 2-13 without Strahan in his career."I want the guy on the field as much as anyone does," Coughlin said. "I think you have to be very smart about this."New York needs quarterback Eli Manning to rebound from a two-interception performance last week after he didn't throw one in the previous two games. Manning completed 28 of 40 passes for 282 yards, his second-highest total of the season, but did not have a touchdown pass for the second time this year.

"We are not finding the way to win the game," Manning said. "That's the way it is, other teams are playing better than we are. We have to keep fighting.

"Sunday will be running back Tiki Barber's last regular-season home game at Giants Stadium if he follows through on his intention to retire after the season. Barber, who had 75 yards on 19 carries and a TD last week, has rushed for at least 100 yards only once in his last five games after doing so six times in his first nine. The Saints are allowing 133.9 rushing yards per game, 25th in the NFL. New York is 7-2 against New Orleans at Giants Stadium. The Saints lost 27-10 at the Meadowlands on Sept. 19, 2005, a game that was moved from the Superdome in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Only 32 of the 133 teams that started 6-2 since the 1970 merger have missed the playoffs. The Giants have advanced to the playoffs each season they started 6-2 or better since then. First-year Saints coach Sean Payton was a Giants assistant coach from 1999-2002 and the offensive coordinator in 2000, the season New York reached the Super Bowl.
